Privacy Policy
What OpenRoad collects, how cookies and Google AdSense ads work here, and the rights you have over your data.
Last updated: September 15, 2026
OpenRoad ("we", "us", "our") publishes field-tested camping and road-trip gear reviews at openroad.top. This policy explains what information we collect when you visit, how it is used, who else may see it, and the rights and choices you have over it.
1. Information we collect
You do not need an account to read OpenRoad. The information we hold falls into three groups:
- Server logs. Our web server records the IP address, browser user-agent, referring page, requested URL and time of each request. These logs keep the site online, help us diagnose faults and let us block abusive traffic.
- Information you send us. If you email us, we keep your address and the contents of the message so that we can reply and follow up.
- Aggregated usage data. We look at aggregated, non-identifying statistics — which pages are read, roughly which regions readers come from — to decide what to review next.
We do not collect payment details, we do not ask for your postal address, and we do not knowingly collect special-category personal data.
2. Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small text files that a site stores in your browser. OpenRoad and the third-party services we rely on may set cookies for three purposes: remembering basic site preferences, measuring traffic in aggregate, and serving advertising. Web beacons and similar technologies may be used alongside cookies for the same purposes. You can delete or block cookies at any time in your browser settings and you can browse in a private window; the site will still work, although some preferences may not be remembered between visits.
3. Advertising and Google AdSense
OpenRoad is funded by advertising and we use Google AdSense to serve it. If you are reading this, the following applies to you:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and/or other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and to other sites on the internet.
- The DoubleClick DART cookie is placed by Google and is one of the cookies used for this purpose; it enables interest-based advertising to be delivered across sites on the web.
- Other third-party ad networks and vendors may place their own cookies or web beacons when their advertising appears on this site. Those cookies are governed by their own privacy policies, and we do not receive the personal data they contain.
4. How to opt out of personalized advertising
You are not required to accept interest-based advertising, and there are several ways to turn it off:
- Opt out of personalized advertising from Google at Google Ads Settings.
- Opt out of many third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info.
- Opt out of participating vendors through the Network Advertising Initiative at optout.networkadvertising.org.
- If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, where a consent notice is presented you can change or withdraw your choice at any time; clearing cookies in your browser also resets that choice.
Opting out of personalized advertising does not remove advertising. It means the ads you see are less relevant to you, and some vendors may instead show contextual ads based on the page you are reading.
5. Analytics
We use aggregated analytics to understand readership in general terms — page views, traffic sources, device class. These reports do not identify you individually and are not used to build a personal profile, to sell data, or to retarget you on other sites.
6. Your rights under the GDPR (EEA, UK, Switzerland)
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you have the right to: obtain access to the personal data we hold about you; have inaccurate data corrected; ask us to erase your data; restrict or object to processing; receive your data in a portable format; and withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent. We process server logs and correspondence on the basis of our legitimate interest in running a secure, functioning website, and advertising and analytics cookies on the basis of your consent. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority.
To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected]. We will respond within 30 days.
7. Your rights under the CCPA / CPRA (California)
California residents have the right to know what categories of personal information are collected and how they are used, to request deletion or correction of that information, to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information, and to be free from discrimination for exercising those rights. We do not sell personal information for money. Because this site carries advertising cookies, some disclosures to advertising partners may be treated as "sharing" under the CPRA; you can opt out using the links in section 4, or by writing to us and asking us to record an opt-out request. We do not knowingly collect or share the personal information of consumers under 16.
8. Retention and security
Server logs are retained only as long as they are needed for security and troubleshooting, then discarded. Correspondence is kept while it is useful for the relationship and deleted afterwards. Data is transmitted over HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure, and while we take reasonable measures we cannot guarantee absolute security.
9. Third-party links and affiliate links
Reviews link out to retailers and manufacturers, and some of those links are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy — at no extra cost to you. We do not control those sites and this policy does not apply to them. Please read the privacy policy of any site you visit from ours.
10. Children's privacy
OpenRoad is written for adults planning their own trips. The site is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA). If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
11. International transfers
We are a small publisher and our service providers, including Google, may process data in countries other than your own. Where required, those transfers rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses.
12. Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated at any time to reflect changes in our practices, our advertising partners or the law. The "last updated" date at the top of this page always shows the current version, and material changes will be flagged on the site. Continued use of OpenRoad after an update means you accept the revised policy.
13. Contact
